Why not wait
We don’t predict recessions, and we don’t think anyone can do it reliably. Here is what history and simple maths do show:
Sources and maths. Recession dates: National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), “US Business Cycle Expansions and Contractions”, 12 recessions from 1948 to 2020 (72 years ÷ 12 ≈ 6). The NBER announced the December 2007 peak on December 1, 2008. The cushion is an illustrative example only, not advice or a forecast: $3,200 × 3 months = $9,600; $9,600 ÷ $400 a month = 24 months. Your own numbers will differ. Nobody knows when the next recession will come; these guides are about being prepared, whenever that is.
